Encyclopeadia

About the Encyclopeadia

At the top of our preoccupations we surely find the inventory of all the different breeds of horses, donkeys and zebras that exist worldwide.

Today, the inventory that we present to you takes into account all the information that we have gathered but does not pretend to be entirely complete regarding the question. Only then, when we will go to purchase, worldwide, all of the different horse breeds that we will hopefully be able to write out a viable list. Again this poses a problem of what we can consider as a breed compared to crossbreds some of which are very recent. Indeed, can one compare the millennium old Pure Bred Arab breed with one of the brand new studbook of the Aegidienberger from 1981 or the Anglo European Sport Horse studbook of some years ago? The case of the multiple different types as for the Welsh pony A.B.C etc certainly poses a problem. We think that before we can eventually talk about a new breed, inevitably issued from one ore more crossbreedings, has to be sufficiently established and be able to show an evident morphological homogeneity.

In the living encyclopaedia of the Park, we will retain first the historically well-established breeds.

The qualification “pony” has been very well defined by the English who say that under his belly not much air can pass. In effect we are talking about a small horse but with characteristically short legs. This is not the case for example with the small Greek or Abyssinian horses. In the first case we will write pony and in the other small horse. Strange enough,  in the U.S.A. the cow-boys and trappers call their horses ponies when talking about their mounts of at least 15 hands and often more. In the present inventory we will not include the breeds in danger of extinction. That will be later the work of the Horse Museum and the World Equine Heritage Foundation.

In our encyclopeadia we retain the following size categories :

  • Miniature horses : upto 8.5 hands
  • Ponies : from 8.5 hands upto 12 hands,
  • Small horses : from 12 hands upto 15 hands, and
  • Horses : from 15 hands and over.

(avec une tolérance de + ou – 5 cm)

As soon as possible we will edit the following inventory listings of :
